さらに5分後、アイマール、メッシ、サビオラといったキープ力の攻撃陣をベンチに控えながら、最後の交代はクレスポに代えてFWフリオ・クルス（インテル・ミラーノでアドリアーノからレギュラーの座を奪った）。
ペケルマンはフリオクルスに前線でポスト役をしてほしかったのだろう。だが、その落しどころが、ボランチが本職のカンビアッソでは、心許ない。他の中盤の二人、ルーチョ・ゴンサレスとマクシ・ロドリゲスも、リケルメのような支配力、展開力を発揮できない。アルゼンチンの攻撃がとたんに単調になった。
息を吹き返したように、というか、大観衆のアドレナリンを90分間注入されっぱなしのドイツが怒濤の攻めに転じ、終了10分前に同点ゴール。
コリンチャンスのテベスとマスケラーノは予想どおりの素晴らしい活躍。とくに、テベスはブラジルで魅せるような、背中でDFを背負って、次の瞬間、ドリブルを仕掛けるという特技を何度も披露してくれたが、いかんせん、プレー位置がゴールから遠すぎた。
結局、メッシやアイマールを投入せず、ドイツのフィジカルの強さに対抗しようとしたアルゼンチンは、延長戦でもなす術なく、PK戦へ突入。
最後は、おそろしく体のでかいレーマンに阻まれ、あえなく敗退。あのレーマンとは、PK戦で相対したくない。試合直後、アルゼンチンの選手が悔し紛れに背広姿のビエルホフに殴りかかるという、残念なシーンもあった。
ヨーロッパの敵地で、セレソンとは決勝戦でしか対決しない好条件に、あっしもアルヘンティーナには力入れした。セルビア・モンテネグロ戦は、いまのところ、今大会で最も美しいゲームだったと思う。
なんといっても、アルゼンチンの世界サッカーへの貢献に敬意を払っている。敗退したいまでも、ブラジルと並んで、ファンタジー・サッカーを象徴するサッカー文化だと信じている。ドイツ・サッカーなんかよりも、遙かにずっと。
まあ、ドイツのこういうのも好きだが。
